HW for Thursday: Driven ball

The Driven Pass is very similar to the Lofted Pass except it is used to play the ball farther and faster. Here are some technique points.

1. Push the ball out diagonal with the outside of your striking foot.
2. Little steps to set your feet for ONE big explosive step.  This generates the power.
3. Strike the ball with your laces.
4. Hit through just below the mid-line of ball.
5. Short, compact swing.
6. Keep your shoulders over the ball to keep the ball down.

A well struck ball will:
  • Have backspin
  • Be around head-level or below
  • Have a good deal of pace and power on it
  • Travel 20-30 yards in the air

If you need more help click here.

Go out and practice. It's the only way to get better.

Barcelona 5 - 0 Real Madrid

Winning is sometimes not enough. You have to win with style. Do it your way.

Homework Help for Tues Nov 30th: Lofted Pass

HW for the next training session is The Lofted Pass!

The technical focus of next Tuesday's training will cover long passing.

The first thing you should do is WATCH THIS.

Tips:

- lock you ankle and turn your striking foot more to the side
- strike the ball as low as you can
- shorten your follow through
- experiment on your own to get the right loft and backspin to make the ball hang in the air

Wednesday Training?

I feel that only 2 trainings a week is not enough for athletes with ambitions like our girls.

I have a poll on the right side of the Blog asking if there is any interest in training on Wednesday night 7-8:30pm in addition to Tues/Thurs.

It would mostly be technique work, small sided games with some speed and agility / fitness.

Let me know if your interested.

Great Match Highlights You Have To See

This was an incredible match. Very entertaining. The highlights are well worth spending 3 minutes watching. Both teams play our system of 1-4-3-3 so it is easy to identify player who play our position.

Goal (1) While the #11 gets wide, the #5 attacks the space created on the inside channel. When he gets blocked off, he shields the ball and plays the supporting #8. The #8 attacks the space, beats his marker with a cleaver move and gets his head up. The #10, who has been asking for the ball early (watch the reply), makes a clever run when he sees the #8 beat his defender and finds himself wide open and scores a great goal.

Goal (2) What can you say. The #11 is confident that he is faster and fitter then his defenders. He dribbles 60 yards, never slowing down, and puts in a great cross for the #9. Watch how the #9 initially supporting the ball, quickly makes his way to the box when he sees the #11 dribbling. Stop the replay at 2:13. Look how the #9 is on the back shoulder of the defender. From this position the #9 has the advantage. As you can see, the defender has turned to watch the ball and losses his mark just enough for the #9 to sneak in and prod it home.

Goal (3) What a strike. For anyone wanting to improve their shooting technique - this is your model. (1) set your feet with a few little steps and one big lunging step - this opens your body for a full leg swing (2) keep your body upright (3) plant your non-kicking foot next to the ball and use it to plant like a pole vaulter would (4) lock your ankle (5) finish the shot by bringing your knee to your chest (6) land on the striking foot. (if you stop the replay at about 2:56 you can see he's got soooo much torque that his plant foot is at head height when he lands).

Goal (4) The biggest Highway Move you will ever see, but one that is very very effective. He knocks it a full forty yards (from the halfway line to the 18 yard box) and passes it across to the #9. I can imagine any of our speedy players doing this move on the weekends.

How We Define Success

There are many people, particularly in sports, who think that success and excellence are the same thing and they are not the same thing. Excellence is something that is lasting and dependable and largely within a person's control. In contrast, success is perishable and is often outside our control - If you strive for excellence, you will probably be successful eventually - people who put excellence in first place have the patience to end up with success. An additional burden for the victim of the success mentality is that he is threatened by the success of others and resents real excellence. In contrast, the person fascinated by quality is excited when he sees it in others.

Joe Paterno - Penn State football coach - 1990

Adults enjoy soccer so much that we have shared it with our children. Yet adults err when we bring our adult performance and outcome based thinking into the developing player's world.

For many adults, their criteria on how to measure sporting quality is absorbed from the sports media. The sports media predominately report on the outcome of adult games at the college and professional levels.  Many of our nation's most popular sports are statistically driven and coach-centered, or are reduced to that for the purpose of debate and discussion.  For soccer, simple statistics like won-loss-tie records, goals for/goals against, saves, number of corner kicks, time of possession and so on are straight forward ways to quantify what happened in a match.  Yet those measurements fail to show the complete picture of a spontaneous, open ended, transitional sport with no timeouts.  In particular, the won/loss record of a youth team does not accurately reflect how the game was played, how the players performed, qualities of the opposition, how well the coach prepared the team to play, or technical development of players over time. The bottom line is that typical media oriented statistics are largely meaningless in developing a quality youth soccer program.

The process of doing one's best is the key to success.
The determining criterion of success is whether a player gave his or her best that day. Doing one's best is the most important statement a player can make about the importance of an activity and the meaning it has for them.  It is the stance of Sac United to focus greatly on match performance; yet this is not to say that teams should not strive to win.  Wanting and trying to win is desirable and praiseworthy. It generally means trying your best. Indeed trying to play your best (match performance) often leads to winning. But not always!

This is why Sac United is a "Player Centered Program."  We believe that striving to improve match performance is the most important task at the youth level.  Simultaneously, we believe players should play to win. Coaches should teach and develop players in a manner where they learn how to play at a high level and create for themselves the opportunity to win matches. But even if a team loses a match, they should feel competent and equipped to compete and enjoy the game.  It comes down to this: We want our players to compete, learn, improve and enjoy the game for a lifetime.

Intrinsic success is by its nature more difficult to measure than extrinsic success. A trophy is more tangible to an adult than the exhilaration a child feels while playing soccer. The ultimate measure of success, a child that stays in the sport into adulthood, will require a good deal of patience from the adults in their lives - but yields lasting benefits making all the time and effort worthwhile.

Soccer Homework: Stop-Hop and Push

Soccer homework for Thursday's training: The Stop-Hop & Push x 20

Here is the Stop-Hop & Push procedure.

  1. Start the ball rolling with the outside of your right foot.
  2. Move quickly to catch up with ball and STOP it with the sole of you right foot as you HOP over and past the ball. (Both feet should be past the ball.)
  3. Plant and pivot on your right foot turning 180° and PUSH the ball back the opposite direction with the outside of the left foot.
  4. Repeat steps 1,2,3 but with the opposite foot.

Notes:
- The ball should move like it is on a train track -- Only in two directions.
- Ball should stop completely
- The further you HOP past the ball, the easier it is. Just don't go too far over.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I will pick a few people at random to demo at the start of training.

If everyone can do 20 stop-hop and pushes with no trouble, no running to start training.

Weekend Goals You Have To See

Cut-Back Cross addition:

It's the easiest way to set up a goal.

Here is another great one from the Merseyside derby.

Great Build-Up addition:

Watch the second replay again! It's awesome! Watch how he just knows (he doesn't have to look) where his teammate is and as he dribbles straight ahead he's able to draw all the defenders to him. Then he disguises what he wants to do with an outside the foot pass. How cool is that. With just TWO passes, two players beat six defenders!

Clever Finish addition:

Gotta love the lefties...

WOW!!! Addition:

Extreme Family,

I've been putting together soccer info for our new player Alex and her family -- Sac United playing philosophy, our system of play, team rules, that sort of thing.

I think I gave it out at the start of the season - but just in case didn't - please take a look and share it with the players. It not only has our team system positions, but also the responsibilities of each position. Lots of great reading.

Also be sure to check out the "HowTo" tag on the right column for video examples of players that play each position.

Game Notes: NorCal Fall League vs WSC

Dear Extreme Family,

I think we demonstrated on Saturday that you can play well and lose a match.

The game should have been over within a few minutes - we had chances and we failed to execute. We dominated proceedings for the entire half but lacked the will to finish.

Then, in one moment, we made a litany of mistakes that should not happen and they took advantage. Going into halftime 0-1 was completely against the run of play.

Many of you could see I was frustrated at the break. I didn't have much to say to the girls. Our game plan of attacking down the flanks and cutting off the supply to their creative players was clearly working. There was nothing for me to add except to say it was up to them as a team to have a greater commitment and energy. By leaving them to talk amongst themselves, I was hoping that they would strengthen their team mentality and resolve.

They did. For much of the second half it was one-way traffic and in the last 5 to 10 minutes Woodland were counter-attacking as we pressed players forward. But we missed too many chances and in the final third you need to be more clinical offensively and defensively.

We had a great team performance and great energy in the second half. But we have to be more clinical to achieve our goal - we can't lose a game like that.

We are a team that wants to have the ball and work tirelessly to press and hound. They took advantage of our mistakes, you have to give them credit for that.

We are on the verge of playing very well. The basis is there, the collective team quality is there but we have to transform that into points.

I wasn't angry with the team. I felt sorry for them because they had an outstanding attitude and an outstanding display. You can only congratulate them for their improving team attitude. I feel sorry for the fact that they have not been rewarded but we live in a realistic world and when you don't score and don't take your chances then you don't win big games.

So to sum up, their are two aspects we evaluate after each match, the performance and the result. This weekend, the performance in terms of system and style of play, creative ideas, team-play was good - the result needs to be improved.

This weeks trainings will be fun and focus on finishing

See everyone at training.

One Club! One Love!

A Hunger to Score

In Italy they would say, "An anger to score."

Here we might say "Hungry to score."

Either way, these clips show teams that are incredibly hungry to score.

Not only does the #9 do an incredible job digging the ball out when it looks like the defender should have it, watch the left-winger CRASH the goal to get the final touch.

Watch the effort of the right-winger to into the box.

A great goal created by some brave tackles, an impressive run from the Left-Back and a great finish.

September GOTM Contest: Win $25

HowTo: Ask for things to help you play better

As a player, it is OK to ask for things.

If you need help. Ask.

If your in a good position to receive the ball. Ask.

Here is a clip a a player who had a good game over the weekend. This player had a positive attacking attitude throughout the game and was always looking to create or be involved in scoring chances for the team. I think it is a good example of how it is OK to ask for the ball with your movement and communication.

Enjoy.

How does an ant with wings learn how to fly?

(Ask Cookie. She learned on Tuesday night)

Game Notes: NorCal State Cup vs. Placer Gold

Dear Players and Parents,

Please read through the post and watch the videos to support your learning this week.

The Match Report is pretty simple: Make our scoring chances and play consistent with better intensity. We are on the verge of playing well once we get over the hump of consistently playing with intensity and making our passes and scoring plays. We are giving up too many goals from long balls (concentration) and soft goals because we failed to clear a ball. And we are not scoring when it can change the game. Defending set plays are an opportunity to prepare to defend and not rest!

When teams give up goals they are vulnerable and their confidence level drops. Think about our mentality when we get scored on - we became vulnerable - look at our past games - we are giving up goals after we initially get scored on -- both of our last NorCal matches against tough opponents were 0-1 at halftime yet finished 0-6 & 0-4 (We also have to look to fitness as an issue as we seemed to fade in each match). You have to develop the mind set to consistently get after them. How do you develop this mindset? How does an ant with wings learn to fly?

Training this week will be fun and will focus on being resilient.

Remember to focus on your performance and not your teammates mistakes. Find ways to encourage your teammates by how hard you play and the words you use to uplift your teammate.

To enter: Post a comment with your favorite goal & your name. If they pick your goal next Saturday, you win $25!

This contest is open to all players, parents, & siblings of the Extreme family. Get your vote in before Saturday Sept 25.

Good Luck!

Game Notes: NorCal State Cup vs Odyssey South

Extreme Family,

While we are very disappointed by the result on Saturday, you have to give credit to Odyssey South for taking the initiative and and playing aggressively. In the end they wore us down and the 6-0 score certainly flattered them I think (to put that into perspective, they also hammered Manteca FC in a NorCal Premier League match 5-1 later that day).

It was always going to be a challenge to drive the 3 hours to Visalia and then be expected to come out of the traps flying, but the girls did a good job of handling the pressure and even proved to be on even footing with Odyssey for the first 25 minutes. They kept knocking at the door and eventually we collapsed. The third goal was particularly deflating and I am a little disappointed we didn't respond better. Instead of rising to the challenge and rolling up our sleeves, the girls conceded a little bit. This is something that we will work to improve in the coming months.

Looking back, it is easy to see how missing Katie and Cookie not only hurt our defensive teamwork, but also limited our options going forward as all too many times our attacks hit a wall in the Odyssey half. We lacked a variety in our attack, and while we troubled them early with our ability to pass out of trouble and find the space behind the defense, we were unable to sustain or capitalize on our better moments.

Despite the result, I still believe in this team's potential. We are playing catch-up in areas of aggression and fitness, but lead in playing patterns and passing and possession ideas.

Soccer progress is a marathon not a sprint. We will get there as a team. If the girls can keep focusing on their improvements and set good goals for themselves, this group can do it.

Results like this must bring motivation to make yourself better.

Soccer Problems to work on:

- Being aggressive to the ball. Anticipating the play on both Offense and Defense. This take time to learn. We worked on it on Tuesday, but when you play a team with more experience it is difficult.

- Playing out of pressure. Our best moments were when we linked from the back to front with our passing finding the open players. But we still struggle with teams that put us under pressure. This too takes time and commitment to improve. We must strive to make our training session even more competitive to simulate match pressures.

- Attacking options. Sometimes we get too stuck in one soccer idea. We will work to bring more effective variety to our attack.

- 1v1 defending / group defending. Specifically choosing the right moment to attempt a tackle, how to cover a pressuring teammate, and using communication as a organizing tool to help you defend.

- Fitness. We were worn down by superior athletes more then superior soccer ideas.

HowTo: Defend in Midfield

Here is a video for all the players who have aspirations to play anywhere in the middle of the park (#6 or #8) or any players wanting to be better at defending

This is Darren Fletcher. He plays for Manchester United and is what could be called an unsung hero.

Watch this 2 minute clip of him and this teammates defend as a team. It's from the BBC Match of the Day program.

Check out how Darren and his teammates communicate (talk, point, give encouragement) and work with each other to mark and defend.

In this first shot - look how the #6 is protecting the back four by acting as a screen while watching the players to his right.  He isn't concerned with chasing the play, only preventing the other team from creating a scoring opportunity. [Also notice how far back the #11 is tucked back helping to defend ;)]

Next as the #7 applies pressure, he is man-marking the opponents #10, denying him space.

The central midfielder: Individual Task When Opponent in Possession
  • primary task is to eliminate player
  • be able to defend zone and position
  • be strong in 1:1 duel
    1. attack on the ball! intercept
    2. keep player in front
    3. come in front of the player to defend
    4. good defensive header
    5. backing, and pinch in
  • be explosive! fast
  • preventive coaching  /  communication
  • able to play 1:1, without backing
  • strong, defensive header
  • be able to lock down against 2 strikers
  • delay opponent as long as necessary
  • with 2 strikers, know how to play on 10
  • with 3 strikers, play positional
  • deal with emerging attackers by good positioning

Effort, Attitude & Commitment. One Club! One Love!

A Post For All Aspiring Midfielders

This is a video highlight from a recent match which follows every touch of Arsenal's Tomas Rosicky. If you want to make better decisions in the middle of the park, watch the soccer decisions he makes. What positions does he take up? How does move to get open? When does he dribble and when does he play quick? When does he attack and when does he possess? How does he help defend?

Then incorporate your observations into your play in practices, matches, and at home.

What's most impressive for me is to see how many times his movement allows him to receive the ball with his back to goal and do a half-turn to be able to create or link an attack.

Fall is a wonderful season for soccer.
College soccer starts again.  All the major European leagues start again.
Which also means my favorite TV program, Match of the Day, start again.  It's the weekend round-up of the English Premier League with extended highlights of all the goals and major action.
It's Sportscenter.. for soccer and it's wonderful.
Or, if you happen to have Fox Soccer Channel, there is the EPL Review show.  If you want you could set your Tivo or DVR for Sunday @ 5 pm on FSC.
If you want to get better, watch the best.

Howto: Be A Leader

There are many different types of leaders. On Thursday we will be voting to chose our captians for the fall NorCal season. This is a big responsibilty and one that is not given lightly. It is not a popularity contest. So before the girls pick captains for the next few months, I thought I would share a few perspectives about what makes a good teammate, leader, and captain.

Over the course of her four-year career at UNC, Carla Overbeck was one of the most improved players on the team. Her improvement came from her desire to become competitive in practice. She developed a passionate desire to see everyone on the field with her compete as hard as possible. This transitioned into part part of what Carla understood about everyone who plays the game: they can all make a decision to take their intensity up another notch.

From Vision of a Champion & Carla Overbeck:

…The first step is to be a voice on the field. Whether it's an instructive voice or not, just be a positive voice.

Why are girls silent on the soccer field? You want to be liked; you don't want to be perceived as someone who's bossy, and knows everything. While I always wanted to be helpful to my teammates, like anyone else, I also wanted them to have respect for me.

I think if you scream at people all the time, obviously that's not a very effective way to lead and get respect. That's why the tone in which you speak to people is extremely important. If you're constantly yelling and screaming, not many people want to hear that. Even if it's a negative, I think there's a way you can deliver your message in a positive way, just by the tone that you use.

From my past, I know that I have always tried to get to know people as people -- what makes them tick, and how to motivate each individual. That's just being a good teammate, being a good leader. I don't think that means you treat everyone the same. You handle every person and every instance differently…

…If you can understand and be compassionate for every person's position and role, it makes you more aware of what's happening on the field, and aware of the different personalities on your team. It might sound kind of silly, but you should simply treat people the way you would want to be treated. For example, imagine yourself playing for a coach who yells and screams all the time. Would you benefit from that? I certainly wouldn't.

I think it's also important to be a good person off the field. Others have a lot of respect for that. If you see a teammate struggling -- maybe to fit in -- try to support her. Always be willing to lend a helping hand, whether it's getting someone a ride to a game or collecting the balls after practice -- even something small like that.

I was captain of the National Team, but there have been a lot of veteran leaders. Julie Foudy is an example. She's a vocal leader, and she leads by example -- her work ethic is unbelievable. There are a lot of ways to be a leader. You could not say anything during a practice or a game, and work to exhaustion, and I think people would still respect that. That's definitely a way of leading. You gain a lot of respect from teammates with a strong work ethic. Kristine Lilly doesn't say a whole lot, but her actions on the field make her a great leader. There's another perfect example on my current team. Hege Riise, from Norway, doesn't say much, but on the field she works in such a manner that everyone is in awe of her. In every game, she shows up to play. She's a winner, and she leads. People want to follow what she does, because she makes such a positive imprint.

And finally, here is a video of Chelsea FC and Englands "Captain Fantastic" John Terry.  "Chelsea to the core and a true hero to the fans, John is the most successful captain in Chelsea history and in many eyes, he's the best central defender currently in action. As brave as they come and a superb reader of the game, sound technique and distribution make him more than just a defenders' defender."

Through dedication, perseverance and time spent on your own these aspects can be molded into that of a top player.

Play & Watch soccer to gain tactical awareness. Spend backyard time so your dribble moves get sharp. Find a wall and smash 100 shots with right and 100 with your left then hit the grass and do some sprints. Compete at everything.

Practicing at home, on your own, builds the Mental strength you'll need to get to the top and stay there because you will confident in in every 1v1 situation.

Great Goals Are Inspirational

Here are some more from this week.

Weekend Round-Up

Players & Parents,

I wanted to take a moment to recap the weekends matches.

I think the tournament was a success overall. I could see the progress the girls have been making with their passing combinations & team understanding in attack. On the other side of the coin, our work on pressure/cover is slowly starting to pay off although we still need work dealing with teams that play direct.

It was disappointing to lose another final, but my hope is that this just adds more fuel to the competative fire. We came out strong, but we fell into a pattern of thoughtless passing & aimless kicking of the ball. The Velocity kept the ball better and the pressure wore us down. I still feel their goals were more our own doing then anything they created: The first was a long punt our defense allowed to bounce and then we failed to deal with the result; the second was a case of us panicing in defense - if we would have remained calm, we could have played out of pressure - but we got flustered and presented the ball to an attacker.

We will play that Woodland team again, the next time with our full compliment of players, and next time we will be ready for them.

I want to thank all the girls for their efforts this weekend. Everyone continues to improve with every week of training - this is a good thing.

I look forward to this weekends matches because it is another chance for the girls to get battle tested. Looking at the teams in our bracket there will be some really competetive matches and ones that will really test the girls.

Main Soccer Problems to work on in training:

(1) Passing Accuracy & power (avoiding the Umpa-Lumpa pass)
(2) Team defending - Pressure/Cover/Balance & forwards responsibilities when they have the ball
(3) Reading the game - Reading your teammates
(4) Heading
(5) Playing out of pressure
(6) Mental toughness
(7) Fitness

Bottom line - We are improving. The girls are playing better soccer and are making big improvements in understanding the game. I expect this to continue and our performances to reflect overall progress.

Weekend Review: Cal Cup

Extreme Family,

Thanks to everyone for the great support this weekend. I know it was challenging at times but we couldn't have done it without you.

Each game presented a new challenge for the team - challenges I hope we can learn from this fall.

On Friday we played two of the top teams in Northern California. The Placer United team is definitely one of the stronger more organized teams we will play. They are physically faster and play with a confidence that our girls are still developing. One good lesson I think the girls learned was that they have to be willing to think and play faster. More experienced teams defend at a higher level. They anticipate and read the play better. They take more aggressive angles to attack the ball and know when to take chances and when to hold.

Saturday, we made a few tactical changes, and the girls settled into a good passing rhythm and controlled large parts of both halves. Against Heritage we just couldn't find the combos or one change of pace to get by a very determined defense. Soccer is a cruel game sometimes and I think we were terribly unlucky to surrender a goal so late when we were pushing hard for a winner. Against Woodland we found more of the swashbuckling attitude and created many more chances. We got a great goal right at the start of the second half, a great overlap from Hailey and a very good run from Tigre led to Tia's well taken finish! I think all the girls were up for the game (even in the heat) and played well. MC did excellent in goal, while Katie, MJ & Jessica kept the back together. Paige had a fantastic match as the defensive midfield, controlling the game and linking our play really well with Hailey, Tia, Mikakay, Nat and the rampaging Macy. I think we had a second goal chalked off when it should have stood (but I think it as quite clear that I wasn't happy about the level of our ref crew). T-bone and Alyssa did a great job of holding the ball up in Woodland half and brought teammates into the game. And Tigre did a fantastic job at the #9, especially the second half when her off-the-ball movement was superb and clearly deserved that goal.

Juggle testing continues through July so make sure to practice over the soccer break & watch some soccer. It'll make you better.

See you in a couple weeks.

Combo = #2 with a long diagonal pass to the #10. #10 one-touch control to the #9 for the give-and-go. #10 plays a one-touch pass to the sprinting #11 for the finish.

Portugal 2-0 North Korea

Simão | SU

Combo = #11 makes a diagonal run behind the defense and dribbles down the win. #11 does a  cut-back cross to the #6.

Combo = #9 holds the ball up and doesn't force the play.  Passes the ball back to the open #5. #5 crosses to the on rushing #6 to head into the corner.

Combo = #10 play the overlapping #5. #5 gets down the touch-line and crosses to the open #9 to finish with his head!!! Gotta love it.
